Corrective Eye Surgery
Now, receiving corrective eye surgery is as simple and time consuming as picking out a pair of glasses. New technology, with the use of a laser, can improve your eyesight whether near or far sighted, with little or no discomfort. This laser technology proves to have a quick recovery time, in most cases, within hours of the procedure.
LASIK, which has the medical term of Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, involves cutting a thin flap on the surface of the eye. The flap is lifted and a laser is used to reshape the eye. This reshaping changes the way light enters the eye. Once the procedure is complete, the flap is replaced and soon becomes reattached to the tissue.
Depending on your vision, there are many procedures used in corrective eye surgery to obtain maximum benefits. Some of these corrective surgeries will not benefit some as much as they do others. While still others have drastic and long lasting results. As with any surgery, there is always a risk involved, but with the advancements in technology, for most patients, the risks are non-existent or minimal.
A small probe with low heat radio waves is used to help those who have difficulty in seeing close up. Spots are made around the periphery on the clear, front side, of the eye. This procedure raises the cornea. This non-invasive procedure is called Conductive Keratoplasty and is also used to correct Presbyopia. Presbyopia is a vision condition where the crystalline lens of the eye has lost its flexibility, which in turn also causes problems when trying to focus close up.
One of the newest procedures in corrective eye surgery, that received approval from the FDA as recent as 2004, is the lens implant. These lenses are similar to contact lenses, and are implanted directly over the natural lens of the eye. It has been found, that this procedure best benefits those who have a higher level of nearsightedness. These implants have been known to last up to 13 years with no complications.
Cataract removal can now be done in a simple corrective eye surgery procedure. This procedure also uses implants. A new lens has been specifically developed that is implanted in the eye. Although this procedure doesn't restore full vision, it does partially restore a person's ability to see close up. This procedure has also been found to aid those who have trouble seeing far off. These special implanted lenses are called Intra-Ocular Lenses and are very new. Therefore the outcome, or endurance of the lens is unknown at this time. The IOL lenses are made in such a fashion that they adjust just like your natural eye, which aids you in seeing multiple distances and not just near or far vision.
There are many factors that may lead one to search out information about corrective eye surgery. Whether damage has been done to the eye caused by an accident or simply age which has caused a change in vision, new technology for repairing this damage is being developed all the time and is available to the consumer. If you are considering corrective eye surgery, discuss all the options that pertain to your needs with a certified professional, and find out the risks and benefits of your particular procedure before you make any final decisions.
Each of my eyes are past 20/400. Would corrective surgery help get it to around 20/30 or better? I have astigmatism in my left eye.
I am in college working towards a microbio degree but I also really want to join the state police VERY much! Should I chance it? How much would a severe case like this cost?
Thanks!
